What is Basic Editing?

Basic Editing (also called Copyediting) focuses on grammar, spelling, capitalization, punctuation, hyphenation, and overall manuscript correctness and consistency. In a way it is the simplest form of editing; basic editing might include some sentence rewording to ensure that the meaning is clear, but does not involve significant rewriting or restructuring (See an example).

Here is a list of manuscript issues covered by basic editing
Correct use of language:
  •  grammar
  •  syntax
  •  spelling
  •  punctuation
  •  clarity of expression.

Language consistency:
  •  language and structural parallelism
  •  correct terminology
  •  word capitalization
  •  hyphenation
  •  abbreviations
  •  correct expression of numbers and quantitative data

Visual consistency:
  •  uniform typography
  •  correct hierarchy of manuscript headings
  •  page layout
  •  figures
  •  tables and captions.

 What is Substantive Editing?

Substantive Editing (also called developmental editing) aims to ensure that the structure, content, language, style, and presentation of a manuscript are optimal, so that the author’s findings and intended message are clear. Substantive editing involves in most cases rewriting various parts of the text

For substantive editing an editor must analyze a manuscript and determine:

  • What is the objective of the manuscript?
  • How much should a reader already know about the subject?
  • What should a reader learn from the manuscript?

In addition to all the issues covered in Basic Editing, Substantive Editing includes:

  • Correcting awkward phrasing, ensuring that every sentence is correct in content and structure.
  • In many cases correcting awkward phrasing will require whole sentences to be rewritten. Editor’s comments will be added to the text, for the author to verify that the new text has the intended meaning.
  • Correcting abuse of indirect writing style and passive voice.
  • Eliminating and/or correcting wordiness, inappropriate jargon, or unnecessary abbreviations.
  • Providing notes to the author whenever terminology has been used incorrectly or ambiguously.
  • Providing notes to the author whenever a clarification, or additional information, is required.
  • Providing notes to the author whenever inconsistencies are found in the text.
  • Ensuring that verb tenses have been used correctly depending on the section of the manuscript.
  • Checking for correctness, placement, and clarity of tables and figures.
  • Checking information in tables and figures against textual references.
  • Determining whether connectors and linking sentences have been used correctly.
  • Ensuring that explanations of symbols, abbreviations, and terms are incorporated in the text.

What is Manuscript Enhancement?

After a full analysis of the paper as a whole, the editor will perform a structural revision consisting of the following steps:

  • Ensuring that the information in all sections is complete, appropriate, and accurate.
  • Determining whether additional information is required so that the author’s intended message is fully transmitted.
  • Determining whether rearrangement, expansion, or summarizing of sections is required to achieve the most logical structure.
  • Ensuring that information and arguments are presented clearly and unambiguously.
  • Checking that the presentation of data and results is simple and effective.
  • Deleting any unnecessary repetition, as well as redundancies, contradictions and irrelevant material.
  • Ensuring consistency in tone and writing style throughout the text.
  • Ensuring that the document title and all the headings accurately reflect the manuscript content.
  • Adding connectors and linking sentences if necessary. Ensuring that there is a logical flow from paragraph to paragraph and from section to section.
  • Ensuring that the manuscript has a proper discussion.
  • Ensuring that references are properly placed (does not include reference formatting).
  • Ensure the document contains appropriate navigation aids, such as headings or internal links.

What is Manuscript Formatting?

  • During the process of manuscript submission for publication, Journals may request a manuscript to be formatted following a series of guidelines. Failure to follow these guidelines may seriously delay the publication process.

Do I need Manuscript Enhancement?

Please note all language problems will be solved after your manuscript has undergone Basic or Substantive Editing. However, your manuscript may need a finishing touch to improve its logic and its structure, in order to highlight the most important information. This finishing touch will make the core message of your manuscript clearly stand out.

Why might you need Manuscript Enhancement?

1) Manuscript Enhancement will make it accessible to a wider range of scientists and scholars, which will help your citation statistics considerably.

2) Manuscript Enhancement will improve your chances of being accepted in top quartile journals.

During the peer review process, reviewers must address different aspects of your work to assess its merit.
Our text enrichment work will help reviewers to:

  • Provide an opinion on the potential impact of your work on scientific practice.
  • Provide feedback on the originality of your work.
  • Discuss the strengths and weaknesses of your work; decide whether the methods seem appropriate to answer the research questions and whether the conclusions and/or generalizations are supported by the data.

Text Enrichment will increase the chances of a positive evaluation by reviewers and will allow you to publish in top-tier journals.
